Always trying to learn new skills and experience more of life, Joel lived in Montreal for a 5 week "ecole de francais!" Interested?  You could do it too!  For the final show, he entertains his classmates with a magic trick en francais.

Joel Hilchey is a speaker, writer, and the founder of The Beanstalk Project.  He speaks at schools and events across North America, inspiring character by juggling, storytelling, and playing with mousetraps.
 
The Beanstalk Project (www.thebeanstalkproject.org) is a youth engagement initiative to promote global citizenship, develop youth leadership, and create positive social change. At “unconference” events across Canada, students learn social entrepreneurship skills, connect with mentors, and jump-start their own exciting community projects.
 
Joel graduated from McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada in 2006 with a degree in Engineering Physics, minoring in business. In 2008, he completed his Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he focused on the intersection and connection of technology, society, and the environment.  Specifically, he studied sustainable technologies, policy and decision-making processes, and the elements of sustainable cities and communities.  His education gives him a unique mix of technical savvy, social awareness, and practical business acumen.
 
Having spent his university years as a residence community advisor and leadership developer with ropes courses and ground initiatives, he is well-trained in experiential education and is a skilled and experienced facilitator for corporate groups, non-profits, educational staff, and sports teams.  His keynotes & workshops have helped schools with leadership development, bullying prevention, student engagement, high school transition programs, environmental conferences, and much more.  Since 2006, Joel has been active as the Eastern Canada Presenter for School Specialty & Premier School Agendas, and in that capacity, he is a certified presenter for Covey’s “7 Habits of Highly Effective People/Teens.”
 
Joel is a proud member, and one of the youngest members, of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers and its international umbrella organization, the Global Speakers Federation.
 
A man of many talents, Joel is an amateur actor, singer, juggler and magician. His barbershop quartet "Chameleon" is the current Ontario District Champion. Joel is also on the artistic staff team of the internationally-renowned Hamilton Children's Choir, where he serves as co-conductor of the youth choir.  He loves travelling, rock climbing and tasting exotic foods. A volunteer for Engineers Without Borders, Joel says he has been fortunate to spend time with many amazing people who have helped inspire and shape his beliefs regarding the value of service learning, the importance of human development both locally and overseas, and the amazing power of human passion.
